What A Twisted Melody (A Donny Hathaway Story)

How many of you have a family member with mental illness and wondered what’s it like to be in their mind? Have you ever seen someone talking to themselves on the train and wondered who are they having a full-blown conversation with? Who is their invisible friend and how come they’re the only one that can see them? Well….

Twisted Melodies is more than a theatrical performance about the life of Donny Hathaway. It’s more than listening to the songs of brilliance and getting chills all over yourself as if you’re hearing it for the first time again. It’s more. I’m not going to give the plot away because this is the type of production that’s actually hard to articulate. Hard to put into words how you feel when the lights go black at the end. Hard to express that when it first starts you think to yourself, “where is this going?”  then 100 minutes later you’re awaken from a journey you never thought you were in. The journey of Donny Hathaway. The man, the artist, the husband, the father, the mind of a genius.

Twisted Melodies is playing at the Apollo Theater until Sunday, June 2nd which is tomorrow. The production is touring and premiering in Washington D.C. at the Mosaic Theater, June 19, 2019 through July 21, 2019.  Don’t let this twisted melody stop at the Apollo Theater. Please go see it at a theater near you. Ask for it. Trust me. You are in for a trip!

And to the one-man performer and writer Kelvin Roston, Jr. from the South Side of Chicago.  Thank you. You could have easily written this work to celebrate the music of Donny Hathaway, but you didn’t stop there. You took us to a place, this space in time that made me absolutely uncomfortable. So dark yet so bright. I didn’t know if my chills came from your acting or the music that you sang while channeling. What a journey. I told you before and I will tell you again, Thank You for your Black Man Magic!
